About Citrosa Plant. The Citrosa Plant (Pelargonium citrosum), also known as the mosquito plant, citronella scented geranium, or lemon geranium, is a perennial bushy plant with crinkled, serrated and ferny leaves emitting a citrus-like fragrance. Small clusters of violet-lavender flowers bloom from summer through fall. The citrosa plant is drought tolerant and needs to be taken inside during the winter in Zones 9 and colder.

Why Grow Citrosa Plant. The citrosa plant is grown for its refreshing citrus scent similar to citronella. This scent makes it harder for bugs including mosquitoes and flies to find and bite humans and animals. The plant is edible. Its leaves can be used in teas or to flavor food, and its flowers can be used as garnishes in salads. The citrosa plant is drought tolerant and very easily to care for.

Care Tips. Citrosa plants can be grown in containers, small spaces, balconies, patios, or large gardens. They can grow in many types of soil with a well-draining property. The plants prefer full sun to partial shade and can be kept inside in a sunny area during the winter time. Water the plants when the soil surface becomes dry. Feed the plants every two to three weeks using a liquid NPK 20-20-20 fertilizer diluted to half strength.
