- About the Plant. The desert rose plant (Adenium obesum) is a succulent with swollen trunk, bright green leaves, and vibrant flowers with various colors. This is a slow-growing plant and may only grow about 12 inches per year although in the wild, the plant can grow up to 6–9 ft tall. It's a popular selection for indoor and outdoor gardening, and is also an excellent choice for xeriscaping gardens.
- Why Grow Desert Rose. One of the reasons for growing desert roses is its unique swollen trunk, or caudex which stores water and helps the plant withstand drought. This makes the plant a good candidate for bonsai cultivation. The desert rose is grown also because of its beautiful, vibrant flowers that resemble roses. Desert rose plants are low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and pest-resistant. The plant is a symbol of prosperity and abundance.
- Care Tips. Desert rose plant thrives in well-draining, sandy soil. It needs space for the bulbous caudex expansion, but not too large for a pot that holds too much moisture. Although the plant tolerates partial shade, it grows best in full sun for 4-6 hours daily but does not need sunlight during dormancy. Desert roses bloom best in full sun conditions. In the summer, the desert rose can be watered and fed once every 2-4 weeks. Water the plant thoroughly each time and avoid over watering. The plant prefers warm temperatures, with a minimum of 60–65°F, not lower than 60°F. Desert roses are succulents that grow during rainy periods and then enter dormant during the dry period.
